Du'a for breaking the fast (iftar)
This is the du'a the Prophet ﷺ said after breaking his fast. The moment of iftar is a time when du'a is answered, so pair this remembrance with your own personal supplication just before you eat. It reminds you that the reward is with Allah, not in the food.
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Dhahaba-ẓ-ẓama'u wa-btallati-l-ʿurūqu wa thabata-l-ajru in shā'a-llāh
The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills.
Authenticity: Hasan (good), reported by Abu Dawud (2357).

Frequently asked
When exactly is this du'a said?
After you break the fast, not before. Before eating you may simply say Bismillah; this remembrance comes once the fast is broken.
Is the fasting person's du'a really answered?
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said the fasting person has a du'a at the time of breaking the fast that is not turned back, so make your personal request then.
