On waking up (Praise be to Allah who gave us life)
These are the first words the Prophet ﷺ would say the moment he woke, thanking Allah for returning his soul and his life. Sleep is treated as a small death and waking as a fresh gift, so the very first breath of your day becomes gratitude. It pairs with the phrase said before sleeping (Bismika-llahumma amutu wa ahya), both from Sahih al-Bukhari 6324.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa ilayhi-n-nushūr
Praise be to Allah who gave us life after having caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.
