Dua for Travel: The Prophet's Words for a Safe Journey

The authentic dua for travel is the one the Prophet ﷺ said as he set off: say "Allahu akbar" three times, then "Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun" (Glory to the One who subjected this to us, and to our Lord we will surely return), then ask Allah for righteousness, piety and an easy trip (Muslim 1342). Before leaving home, say "Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'ala-llah...", and at every stop seek refuge in Allah's perfect words. The traveller's dua is answered, so use the journey to ask for much.
Travel is one of those moments where you feel your own smallness: a machine, a road, a sky, and so much outside your control. The Prophet ﷺ met that feeling not with anxiety but with remembrance. He gave words for stepping out the door, for boarding, for the road, and for coming home, each one handing the journey back to the One who owns the distance.
The travel dua the Prophet ﷺ said
When he mounted his ride to set out, he would say "Allahu akbar" three times, then:
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ
Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun
Glory to the One who has subjected this to us, for we could never have accomplished it by ourselves, and indeed to our Lord we will surely return.
Then he would follow it with the ask:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى، وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى، اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ
Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadhal-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha, watwi 'anna bu'dah
O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness, piety, and deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up its distance.
In the same narration he sought refuge from the hardship of travel, a distressing sight, and finding trouble on return to family and wealth. One dua, and the whole trip is entrusted to Allah.
Before you even leave the house
Protection begins at your own door. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever says this on leaving home is guided, sufficed and protected, and the devils are turned away from him:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'ala-llah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah
In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.
On the road and at every stop
When you stop anywhere on the way, a rest area, a hotel, an unfamiliar town, seek refuge with the words that keep harm away:
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.
Keep your morning and evening adhkar going while you travel; they are your portable protection.
The traveller's dua is special
Do not waste the journey. The Prophet ﷺ said three duas are answered without doubt, and one of them is the dua of the traveller (Tirmidhi 1905, hasan). Travel puts you in a state of need and humility, exactly the posture Allah loves to answer. So on the road, do not only ask for a safe arrival. Coming home
When you return, repeat the travel dua and add:
آيِبُونَ، تَائِبُونَ، عَابِدُونَ، لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ
Ayibuna, ta'ibuna, 'abiduna, li-Rabbina hamidun
We return, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.

Save the travel dua on your phone before your next trip. Say the leaving-home dua at the door, the takbir and travel dua as you set off, and use the quiet hours of the journey to make real dua for what matters.
