Anxiety & hardship
Pour patience upon us and make our steps firm
These are the words Talut's soldiers said as they faced Goliath's army, few in number and heavily outmatched. Instead of asking to escape the trial, they asked Allah to pour patience into their hearts, steady their feet, and grant them victory. Say it whenever a hardship feels bigger than you and you need to hold your ground. It is a verse of the Qur'an, surah al-Baqarah (2:250).
رَبَّنَا أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ
Rabbanā afrigh ʿalaynā ṣabran wa thabbit aqdāmanā wansurnā ʿalal-qawmil-kāfirīn
Our Lord, pour patience upon us, make our steps firm, and give us victory over the disbelieving people.
Authenticity: Qur'an, surah al-Baqarah (2:250).

Frequently asked
Who first said this du'a?
The believing soldiers of Talut (Saul) said it in surah al-Baqarah when they went out to fight Goliath (Jalut) and his army, outnumbered and afraid. Allah then granted them victory, which is why it is recited when facing overwhelming odds.
Why ask for patience before victory?
The order matters: the soldiers asked for patience and firm footing first, then victory. It teaches that Allah's help comes to the one who first holds steady through the trial rather than fleeing it.
