Dua for Protection: The Prophetic Words That Guard You from Evil

The strongest dua for protection in the Sunnah is to seek refuge in Allah with His own words. Say three times, morning and evening: "Bismillahilladhi la yadurru ma'a-smihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Sami'ul-'Alim" (In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing in earth or heaven can harm), which the Prophet ﷺ said keeps harm away (Abu Dawud 5088, hasan sahih). Pair it with Ayat al-Kursi, Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas, and the morning and evening adhkar. Protection is Allah's alone: say the words with certainty, and still take the practical precautions He commanded.
Everyone wants to feel safe: from harm, from the evil eye, from what they can see and what they cannot. Islam does not leave this to worry or superstition. The Prophet ﷺ gave a complete daily armour of words, tied to one truth: the only real Protector is Allah, and you shelter under His name, not under charms or fear.
The dua that keeps harm away, morning and evening
If you learn one protection dua, learn this one. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever says it three times in the morning and three times in the evening, nothing will harm him:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
Bismillahilladhi la yadurru ma'a-smihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Sami'ul-'Alim
In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing in the earth or the heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Refuge in the perfect words of Allah
For any place, any fear, any unseen evil, the Prophet ﷺ taught a refuge you can say anywhere:
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.
He said whoever says it when stopping at a place, nothing will harm him until he leaves. And to shield children and loved ones from the evil eye and every devil, he sought refuge with:
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ
A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every poisonous creature, and every evil eye.
The Quran as a shield
The Qur'an is protection you already carry:
- Ayat al-Kursi (2:255). The Prophet ﷺ said whoever recites it when going to sleep will have a guardian from Allah, and no devil will come near until morning (Bukhari 2311). See Ayat al-Kursi and its power.
- Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas, the two surahs of refuge, which name the exact evils to seek shelter from: darkness, envy, whispering. See the surahs of protection.
- Surah Al-Baqarah in the home. The Prophet ﷺ said Shaytan flees from a house in which it is recited (Muslim 780).
Build your daily armour
Protection is not a one-off spell; it is a habit. Wrap your day in it:
- Morning and evening, say the adhkar, including the Bismillah dua above and the two surahs of refuge. This is the fortress the Prophet ﷺ gave every believer. See the morning and evening duas.
- At home, say Bismillah entering, and before eating.
- Before sleep, recite Ayat al-Kursi and the last three surahs, blowing into the palms and wiping over yourself as the Prophet ﷺ did (Bukhari 5017).
Dua plus real precaution
One balance to keep: the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge in words and locked his door, covered his food and vessels, and took care. Protection in Islam is never a reason to be reckless. Say the adhkar with full certainty that Allah alone guards you, and still take the sensible steps He gave you. Trust is not neglect of the means; it is doing the means and leaving the outcome to Allah.
In practice
Learn the Bismillah dua tonight and say it three times before you sleep and again after Fajr. Add Ayat al-Kursi at night. Within a week it becomes automatic, and you will move through your day knowing you are under the name with which nothing can harm you.
